General FAQ:
Does the Center for Student Success provide academic tutoring services?
No, we are not a tutoring service. Instead, we discuss academic success strategies relating to time management, test anxiety, note-taking, stress management, etc. If you need tutoring, please contact the Academic Skills Achievement Program (ASAP): http://asap.csumb.edu/asap-home
How can I cancel or reschedule an appointment with your Center?
If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call our front desk at 831-582-3615 or stop by our office located in the library at the Tanimura & Antle Family Memorial Library, room 2163. You will need to reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
Does your Center work with all students?
Yes! We work with all students, which may include students on academic probation or in good academic standing. It is advised that you be proactive and seek our services before you head into academic trouble!
Academic Probation FAQ:
Why am I on academic probation?
A student is placed on academic probation anytime their CSUMB or All College GPA falls below a 2.00. Even if you get a 3.50 semester GPA, you can still be on academic probation if your CSUMB or All College GPA is below a 2.00.
I have an academic probation hold on my account? What does that mean and how do I get it removed?
An academic probation hold prevents you from registering for the following semester (Fall 2012). When looking at your CMS account, the hold will be listed as “Prob.” In order to get the hold removed, you will need to attend a "Back on Track" workshop, schedule at least two appointments with the Center for Student Success, and create or update your educational plan. You may also need to turn in midterm grade checks. After completing these steps, your hold will be removed. The deadline to complete these steps is April 9th, 2012.
How many units should I take if I am on academic probation?
It is advised that students take a maximum of 12-14 units in order to do well in those courses. You should consult with your academic advisor to make sure you have an appropriate class schedule.
Do you discuss my academic progress with my parents or guardian?
Under privacy laws-- Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) -- we do not disclose academic information to your parents/guardian. If a parent/guardian would like to discuss your academic progress, a waiver form needs to be signed by both you and your parent/guardian which needs to be hand delivered by the student to the Student Center (building 47) for processing. To download the form, please click here:
I am on financial aid warning/probation and completed the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) workshop. Do I still need to attend the “Back on Track” workshop?
Financial aid warning/probation is a completely different process from the academic probation process. Financial aid warning/probation affects your financial aid disbursement while being on academic probation means there is a hold on your account that will prevent you from registering for Fall 2012 courses.
Can I repeat courses for a higher grade in order to improve my GPA?
Yes. In fact, this is the quickest way to improve your GPA. When repeating courses, the original grade will remain on the transcript, but only the higher grade will be used in the GPA calculation. You should meet with your academic advisor to discuss specific course requirements. You can repeat only 16 units for grade forgiveness.
Does academic probation mean I’m kicked out of school and can’t come next semester?
No. Academic probation is a warning, but if you don’t improve your grades the next semester, you could find yourself in serious academic trouble. The Center for Student Success wants you to stay in school and pursue your academic goals.
